About Andy Clune Coaching

Andy Clune Endurance Running Coach Canterbury

Experienced Coaching

With over 40 years of experience coaching runners at all levels, from beginners, 70 year olds, people of all different shapes and sizes to national level athletes. My approach combines the latest sports science with truly personalised coaching strategies to help you achieve your running goals. I create the plans and sessions myself using the most up to date models of periodisation and calculate your training paces myself. I don't use online pace calculators or simply download training plans. I am a fully qualified and licensed England Athletics Endurance Coach.  I still remain competitive myself, winning a number of races within my age group recently along with qualifying to run in the London Marathon. Berlin is my next target.

Transform your performance with Andy Clune Running Coach

30% is aerobic 70% is running economy - Empowering You to Run Better

For many years the human race has tried to understand or measure the limits of Human endurance. In 1923 A.V.Hill invented VO2 Max by measuring the body's exchanges of gases  in the belief that this could be used as a measure to define the limits of someone's endurance capability hence the term max. This was held up as a measure of performance up to the 90's and is was widely misinterpreted by many Coaches including the American Jack Daniels. Today we understand this not to be the case, although it is true that the majority of elite athletes will have a high V02 Max, If you were to look at the VO2 Max measurements of the start line athletes in an Olympic 10,000 meter or Marathon race this would not determine the winner. There are many other factors at play hence Eluid Kipchoge stating "No Human is Limited". This is even more pronounced at amateur or local races and within he wider running community. Our VO2 Max is largely genetic and developmental during your teenage years. Your VO2 Max can be trained and should be, however this will only lead to a very small percentage gain for the vast majority of runners. The ability to use the highest percentage of your VO2 Max which forms part of your running economy is far more important. Coaching has progressed significantly since the Pseudoscience of 80's and 90's where, Heart Rate and Zone training was invented. However bits of this do still remain for good reason but partly because of the commercialisation of running by the tech manufactures wanting to sell there heart rate monitors and expensive watches. The number of runners I see stuck in zone 2, as a coach I would love to give them a travel card !!!! Understanding your own physiology and where you can improve is what makes you a better runner combined with the most up to date coaching techniques.

Your ability to run well is dependant on a large number of things including but not limited to your body shape, your age, your running age, your biomechanics your muscle fibre type, the size and density of mitochondria present within your fibres, your ability to increase capillaries and red blood cells, your ability to produce ATP,  your ability to clear lactate, your V02 Max, the amount of glycogen your muscles can store. All of these factors and many more go together to produce your running economy or your ability to run effectively and efficiently, Elite athletes will score highly with all these the rest of us will vary. Sports science has progressed significantly in the last 20 years however some of the methods used by the worlds top coaches such as Arthur Lydiard,  Mihaly Igloi (insanely coached athletes to 49 world records) , Renato Canova (to date over 50 Olympic medallists) we can still take much from these coaches techniques and philosophies which sport science has only served to prove and improve. The good news is that a coach with my level of experience and understanding of your physiology can assess you and find ways to improve on all these factors, we will all uniquely be better equipped with some factors and not blessed with others. This is why following generic plans that claim to be personalised from apps or online are highly ineffective and usually will result in only small gains. So if you want to realise your potential and see large gains in your running performance don't delay contact me today.

One-to-One Highly Effective Coaching for Everyone

Generic plans found on the internet or via online influencers and apps are based predominantly on aerobic training sessions with a few that include non targeted S&C. Running is a muscular event only 30% is aerobic. 70% is down to your running economy this can be physiological or neuromuscular.

In order of importance the factors that determine your ability to run are :-

  1. Mind
  2. Body / Physiology
  3. Muscles
  4. Metabolic and Energy Systems

My role as your coach is to work on all of these factors which will lead to significant improvements in your running performance, far greater than the small percentage gains made from generic plans and apps.

Good Nutrition

Discover the power of food and how it helps your running. Understand what to eat during training blocks. Learn about Carb Loading and in race fuelling to avoid common mistakes. Understand the different supplements that runners use.

Strength and Conditioning

We will identify your needs and work on them. Good strength and conditioning becomes more important as we age. Like wine and food different types of strength and conditioning exercises are required during different periods of your training..

Running form analysis

I will asses your running form both visually and filming you with specialist software along with asking you to perform a number of physical tests.

Healthy Habits

There are other factors that will effect your running and training for example sleep and when you eat. Understand how these can benefit you.

Running shoes, Tech and Gear

A positive minefield, I will help you understand the science and the essentials so you can sort out the marketing hype from the facts.

Satisfied Clients

1st time Marathon runner

Marathon coaching canterbury

Andy, just a brief report. I was very happy with that. I followed the plan and I felt strong up until 36km and even then I was able to hold the pace. Only struggled the last 3km, but was able to keep the focus and finish without dropping the pace too much. It’s kudos to you! I think the plan was perfectly paced. It kept me on my toes, but wasn’t too hard to break me at the end. Fuelling worked well too. Had nine gels all together + some chews. No stomach issues whatsoever (which is what I was most worried about). All good and very pleased with how it went. Thank you so much for all your support and brilliant training! ♥️🙏
