For many years the human race has tried to understand or measure the limits of Human endurance. In 1923 A.V.Hill invented VO2 Max by measuring the body's exchanges of gases in the belief that this could be used as a measure to define the limits of someone's endurance capability hence the term max. This was held up as a measure of performance up to the 90's and is was widely misinterpreted by many coaches. Today we understand this not to be the case, although it is true that the majority of elite athletes will have a high V02 Max, If you were to look at the VO2 Max measurements of the start line athletes in an Olympic 10,000 meter or Marathon race this would not determine the winner. There are many other factors at play hence Eluid Kipchoge stating "No Human is Limited". This is even more pronounced at amateur or local races and within the wider running community. Our VO2 Max is largely genetic and developmental during your teenage years. Your VO2 Max can be trained and should be, however this will only lead to a very small percentage gain for the vast majority of runners. The ability to use the highest percentage of your VO2 Max which forms part of your running economy is far more important. Coaching has progressed significantly since the Pseudoscience of 80's and 90's where, Heart Rate and Zone training first came about. However bits of this do still remain for good reason but partly because of the commercialisation of running by the tech manufactures wanting to sell there heart rate monitors and expensive watches. The number of runners I see stuck in zone 2, as a coach I would love to give them a travel card !!!! Understanding your own physiology and where you can improve is what makes you a better runner combined with the most up to date coaching techniques.
Your ability to run well is dependant on a large number of things including but not limited to your body shape, your age, your running age, your biomechanics your muscle fibre type, the size and density of mitochondria present within your fibres, your ability to increase capillaries and red blood cells, your ability to produce ATP, your ability to clear lactate, your V02 Max, the amount of glycogen your muscles can store. All of these factors and many more go together to produce your running economy or your ability to run effectively and efficiently, Elite athletes will score highly with all these factors the rest of us will vary across the lot. Sports science has progressed significantly in the last 20 years however some of the methods used by the worlds top coaches such as Arthur Lydiard, Mihaly Igloi (insanely coached athletes to 49 world records) , Renato Canova (to date over 50 Olympic medallists) we can still take much from these coaches techniques and philosophies which sport science has only served to prove and improve. The good news is that a coach with my level of experience and understanding of your physiology can assess you and find ways to improve on all these factors, we will all uniquely be better equipped with some factors and not blessed with others. This is why following generic plans that claim to be personalised from apps or online are highly ineffective and usually will result in only small gains. So if you want to realise your potential and see large gains in your running performance don't delay contact me today.
